The leaf is made of lacquered, black papier-mâché and it is painted on one side with a garden view. On the left, there is a magnificent peacock and on the right, a parrot eyeing some fruit. The trees in the background resemble a typical English romantic landscape, as made fashionable by Constable, the major proponent of landscape painting.
The ivory handle is intricately carved in a concentric pattern, using a typical Indian technique.
