Undecorated wooden splints and brass rivets.
Commemorative fan from the Universal Exhibition held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the centenary of the American War for Independence.
On the front, there is a full leaf view of The Art Gallery building and a banner at the bottom that reads “INTERNATIONAL EXIBITION THE ART GALLERY PHILADELPHIA 1776 – 1876”. On both guardsticks it reads: “registered June 8th 1875”.
On the back, there is an American eagle set above intertwining flags. It holds an emblem and a branch in its claws (possibly from a bay tree). “100 years” is written in the centre and “1776” and “1876” on the sides.
The same fan is referred to in Il tempo del ventaglio, op cit. pages 37 and 76.
