Rural Scene

RURAL SCENE

Length cm 27,5
Spread cm 50
Sticks 19 plus 2

Holland, around 1680-1700

A fan painted at gouache at whole page on kid or maybe on velin.

The symmetric scene, shows a picnic in the countryside. The marshy environment is visible thanks to the presence of water, a cultivated field makes us think about a summer day and in the background, the sea merge together with the sky.
The painting doesn’t surely belong to a great artist, maybe Flemish.
The male clothes helps us to enclose the execution of the fan to the fashion of the end of the XVII century: the scruffies are not yet culotte and, even if the scene is rural, the shoes are too high at the malleolus and the blouses are too large.

The ivory sticks are smooth except for the guards where there’s a little pearl nog of  cm. 4 X 1,5 , engraved at bas-relief and representing a woman, the rivet is covered by a pearl decoration too as we can see in other fans which cross the century.

On the recto, a bunch of stylized flowers which are not, at the moment, reproducible.
